Black Women to Watch For in 2012

Azealia Banks - rapper/singer Azealia Banks’ much anticipated EP “1991” is finally out. The 21-year-old “young rapunzel” will always be a reminder of my first trip to Paris, as I wandered the streets playing ‘212,’ ‘Liquorice,’ ‘The Chill$’ and the stunning Interpol cover ‘Slow Hands’ on repeat.

Kat Graham - Besides being unbelievably gorgeous, the Jewish black actress is also extremely talented. Her run on “The Vampire Diaries,” as fiery witch Bonnie Bennett is proof of her acting chops - passionate, strong, and reserved. An interesting contrast to her role in the FunnyorDie Black and Yellow parody “Black and Jewish.”  Her new EP “Against the Wall” also came out recently and while it’s not a stunning example of musical brilliance, it’s catchy as hell (favorites: “Put Your Graffiti on Me” and “Supadope”) and the video for PYGoM is not to be missed. Graham has also appeared in several music videos (including Akon’s ‘Lonely’) and has performed as background dancer.

Nicole Beharie - Few actors or actresses are as charismatic as Beharie in facial expression alone. All you have to do is see a snippet of her acting to know that Beharie has something special. Her energy, the light in her eyes, the quirk of her lips or eyebrows, her movements - Beharie is a formidable player in the acting game and not a bad singer herself. I’d recommend “Small of her Back” (for which I’ve only seen the trailer, which is what initially convinced me that I loved her) and “My Last Day Without You,” which sealed the deal and also makes me wish she’d put out an EP too. American Violet is also a prime example of her acting chops. Beharie most recently appeared in the critically acclaimed movie “Shame,” as Michael Fassbender’s love interest.
